Wesley Fryer, an Oklahoma-based educator, author, blogger, speaker and long-time advocate of technology integration in schools, is a firm believer that layering lessons with digital content makes learning authentic. And when that happens – when a teacher brings meaningful content to the students, or has them seek it out and manipulate it to make a concept come to life – that’s when learning goes beyond the surface of the facts. That’s when learning becomes authentic.

Fryer insists that giving students access to the rich mine of digital resources should be an integral part of the repertoire of the 21st-century school. With the continued explosion of information, education must move from that stagnant place of trying to teach all the content to everyone to one of differentiated and personalized instruction, says Fryer. Stagnation happens, he believes, when too  much emphasis is placed on achievement tests and standardization. Attempting to teach all content all the time will become an increasingly “fruitless endeavor.”

Fryer says teachers have to “be the inventors and designers of engaging work for students, work that has personal elements…. Technology is incredibly powerful. If we’re armed with it, not only does it help connect our students to a world of content, but it also enables them to create, collaborate and share at levels we simply didn’t even imagine in the 20th century.”
